What is Pilates?
Pilates is a low impact exercised, developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s. Pilates uses slow, controlled movements to help build up your core muscles as well as other areas of the body such as legs and arms. The precision of Pilates allows you to concentrate on your breathing and the muscles you’re working as you move through the routine. Each routine also allows you to adjust your movement, depending upon your ability.
Is Pilates different from yoga?
Whilst Pilates and Yoga are very much based on building strength, using your breath and slow movements to improve strength they are very different experiences. In yoga, you tend to hold a pose, whilst Pilates is about each movement flowing into the next in a fluid sequence. Pilates can be mat-based as well as practised with equipment such as a resistance band or stability ball, the majority of my classes are matt based.
What are the benefits of Pilates?
Pilates focuses on your core muscle groups to build strength, fitness and flexibility throughout your whole body. With regular practice, you’ll notice:-
Improved posture
Better balance
Greater joint mobility
Improved fitness levels
Better muscle tone
Reduced stress
Pilates is also good for protecting your lower back and reducing tension in your shoulders or neck, because Pilates focuses on body awareness, you’ll be less likely to suffer from aches, pain and injuries.
